A Year...
...ago This Is Burning Man was a first-draft ms. in the hands of my capable and brilliant editor Claire Smith at Little, Brown. This year it became a published book, a #7 Los Angeles Times best-seller, and an excuse for me to have many, many enlightening and warming and wonderful meetings and conversations with people who cared about Burning Man, everywhere from New York to Seattle. I am filled with gratitude to everyone who said kind words, bought the book, talked to me about the book, talked to me for the book, and thrilled that this year, Burning Man continues to grow and morph and be one of the most fascinating worlds I've had the privilege of playing in and documenting.
More to come in the next year...just this week spoke to reporters from both the San Francisco Chronicle and a national NPR program about the book, and you'll be sure to find out here when/if those conversations turn into consumable media items for your delectation. And I should have some announceable news regarding the 2005 paperback edition of This Is Burning Man soon, I hope.
If you have already read and I hope enjoyed This Is Burning Man, thank you. Now, it's time to buy the three other books from this year that I contributed to. (Uh, that is, if you care to.)
Lost in The Grooves--edited by Kim Cooper and David Smay, an encyclopedia of neglected but amazing records, to which I contributed 19 original 300 wordish essays, covering artists from the Cowsills to the Vulgar Boatmen, from Hackamore Brick to Miracle Legion.
The Science Fiction Film Reader--edited by Gregg Rickman, featuring my original essasy on Destination: Moon and its relevance to science fictional film, and literature.
Choice: The Best of Reason--edited by Nick Gillespie, an anthology of the best of the past decade of the magazine I've worked for for the past decade, featuring my interview with Milton Friedman and an essay on attitudes toward capitalism in pop music.
